Open Operating Theater

The EuroSpine Foundation has started to build a video library of the classical spinal procedures. These films (A-movies) are made on invitation of the Editor-in-Chief of the European Spine Journal, on behalf of the SSE, by SSE members or by non SSE members, and follow a standardized film script format including an abstract.

New technologies within spine surgery are developing rapidly.  For this reason, the ESF decided to offer to those who develop such innovations, the Medical Technology Companies, the possibility to create video films of their innovative surgical techniques (B-movies).  This will also be done under the strict control of the EuroSpine Foundation and the Editor-in-Chief of the European Spine Journal.  An identical standardized film script format will be used for these product driven videos to make them user friendly, easy to understand and of superior scientific educational value compared to other product promotion

information.  The filming of such a surgical technique will be done with a surgeon selected by the Editor-in-Chief of the European Spine Journal, on behalf of the ESF together with the industry.  For those surgeons however, the same rules apply for participation as for the regular A-movies.   The B-movies will be sold to or made available to the industrial partner for promotional use.

Key terms:

  • The surgeries are performed by renowned surgeons on invitation of the Editor-in-Chief of the European Spine Journal and in collaboration of the Medical Industry
  • Each film is produced in accordance with the shooting script guidelines
  • The written abstract describes the case, the pre and postoperative patient treatment, the surgical procedure, the surgical conclusions and outcome and closes with listed references literature
  • The abstract is linked to the web platform of Springer where the film can be viewed
  • The access to the Open Operating Theater is free for European Spine Journal subscribers.  Non-subscribers will have to pay a symbolic access fee.

The aim of the OOT is to add an attractive value to the pure scientific content and structure of the European Spine Journal. This web-based film library intends to cover eventually all classic spine surgeries and shall serve as a reference base for surgical spine practice.

The benefit for the film author is the same as a scientific publication with the same impact factor.

The benefit for the Med Tech industry is to generate a marketing tool from a scientific non-commercial medical forum for the presentation of their product that spine surgeons can refer to in their daily surgical work.

More than 25 surgical movies have already been or are in the process of being edited with or without the presentation of specific products.
